Step 8 – Content & SEO
The next step to creating your own website is adding content. This isn’t as simple as it sounds though. When you’re putting your website’s content together, you need to create quality content, while thinking about your SEO and marketing.
Adding quality content
It’s not enough to simply write what you want to say. Your content not only needs to be useful, it also needs to be well-written. Your website is likely to be the first impression someone has of your business. So you want it to be a good one.
Well-written content not only says your site is professional, but also that you have taken the time to produce something worth reading. So it is essential that you pay attention to what you’re saying and how you’re saying it.
Here are some tips to get you started:
- Stick to a central idea for each post or page.
- Keep your paragraphs short: 3 or 4 sentences, with one main idea in each paragraph.
- Your first paragraph should indicate what you’re going to be saying.
- Your last paragraph should sum up what you’ve said, and possibly include a call-to-action.
- Use easy-to-follow transitions between your paragraphs; this includes using words like ‘firstly’ and ‘secondly’ to order your points, ‘but’ to make a contrasting point, or ‘In addition’ to add to a point.
- Check your spelling and grammar.
Your content helps your SEO
By adding content that provides worthwhile reading for your market, you’re automatically helping your SEO. Quality content speaks for itself and your audience will want to read what you have to say.
But it also helps to pay attention to your keywords and phrases. You should have a clear idea of what your main keywords are for your site, and for each post or page. This way you can focus your writing around your keywords.
You will probably have several keywords, but each post or page should only focus on one of these. Try to include your focus keyword in headings, and throughout the text of that page. You can also use it in the images on your page. Just be careful not to overdo it. Using a plugin like Yoast SEO can help direct you.
Using tags and categories can help to improve your audience's experience on your site. It provides a map of sorts, that allows them to find the content they're looking for.
Marketing through your content
When you're adding content, create categories on your site that apply to your theme. Then add your pages and posts to the categories that work best. You can always add new ones as you go along.
You want to create a roadmap of sorts, to ensure that readers can easily find the content they are looking for. Easy navigation means a better user experience, and ultimately, increased traffic.
